README
« on: July 02, 2005, 10:56:21 PM »
as I said before, I decided to start the development of new game. After long thinking I decided to work on multiplayer MUD / RPG.

What will it look like: the engine will be very similar to Runescape 1. It will look a bit outdated, but for single person it's not possible to make anything better. And even such goal is very daring.

Right now I have NO idea at all about many important things, it will be necessary to make many decisions, like:
- the setting of the game. It could have "fantasy/fairytale" setting, like (RS), but it could be also totally different. Maybe it could be a bit sci-fi, maybe a bit cyberpunk, maybe even post-catastrophics, whatever.
It's also necessary to think, whether it will be possible to create graphics for such style. Possibilities of the engine will be very limited. In old RS the things are quite simple: ground is mostly just different shades of green or brown, buildings have just quite simple textures on the walls. And there are some objects to not look too plain - some flowers, trees etc. I don't think I can create more detailed world, it will have to remain such simple.

- gameplay, storyline. RS is being criticised as too hack&slah (read the explanation here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hack_and_slash)  It could be nice to make something deeper, with some meaningful plot. But of course it is very hard to invent something interesting and addicting. Well, maybe in the end I will also end up with hack&slash, because people seem to like it  :-\
But anyway, it would be nice to have something special, to differ from RS.

============
It would be very helpful to hear your opinions, suggestions and ideas, so feel free to post them!
============

I created very first version of the engine, you can see it. PLEASE note, that there is nothing much to see yet, it has almost no graphics and no features, so don't be disappointed :)
Also note that it is not yet optimized, and it will be probably very slow on older computers (it will improve with time)
All you can do is:
- move your character (by clicking somewhere)
- rotate the view with left&right arrow keys
It is already "multiplayer" (if more people connect, they will see each other)

So, you see, there is still much work ahead :)

Soooo.... I uploaded slightly improved version.

What is new:
- buildings have "removable" roof
- you will meet NPC person, you can talk with the person :)  (right click & talk) Don't expect any witty conversation though :)

what is old:
- you can pick up & drop items
- rotate view with left & right arrow
- if you have microsoft's java the movement will be smooth. If you have Sun's java the movement will not be very smooth
- please don't respond to this thread (I'm better locking it up)

After looong time another update.
I made many internal non-visible changes, and also some small visible updates. Now it is possible to chop down the trees (they will "regenerate" after few seconds) and get logs from them. It is also possible to drop logs and light them. There is also first attempt for house "furniture", there are painting on the walls :) The character was replaced with 3d model (and not sprite), but it is not animated yet.

Last time somebody asked where did the girl go. She is back now :) And she brought 39 her friends with her :) Now there are 40 red-dressed girls walking randomly through whole "world", if you walk around for a while you will surely meet some.

I put teh_luggage's texture on some walls... I think it looks good from near distance, but it looks bad from far away. I think that the bricks should be at least one pixel bigger.
Now you can also use plus/minus (on numeric keypad) to zoom in/out the view to better examine textures.  (if you zoom too near or too far it may display some glitches - it is ok because players will not be able to zoom view in finished version)

There is new version - again with many internal changes, and also few visible changes :)

- no longer possible to chop tree at distance
- there is example of new better "highway" (behind house on the right side)
- "examine" works (but don't expect any meaningful descriptions :) )
- most important change, there is first version of combat. You can attack robots (not girls), so try it

There is another small update:
- equipment now has real effect (equipped armor improves your defence, weapons attack)
- it is possible to trade items with npc vendor. There is one vendor which looks like.. ehm, wizard :) You'll  find him. Currently each item costs exactly 2 coins :)

Added first version of "realistic" character animation (walking). Looks totaly ugly, I will have to find some good 3d artist to improve it

Another update: the map rotates (but it's still not clickable)
