Title: Cheaters
Post by: picolo on May 14, 2005, 04:32:14 PM
I've been playing DB for about 2 1/2 weeks now and was a GD player way back when. And right now its hard for me to believe that a select few players arent cheating here at DB. Yesterday i seen icesabree at 154 and today he is at 324! Someone tell me if this is possible without help. The fact that there are 3 players at the top all with similar scores makes it more obvious.

This makes the game very pointless if there is no chance of u getting to the top without cheating. I mean the only reason I play is to get my name at the #1 spot but if I cant do that then there is no reason to play.

My theory is that they are using each other and logging in as guests to let the others win. If this is being done then there needs to be a way to stop it. And that starts with the guests. I think guests should ONLY be able to play non-rated games or else this stuff will continue. Also you should not be able to play someone you've beat 4 times in a rated game. That's how it worked in GD it the system was great.

I hope you will consider my ideas for the sake of DB! Thanks...

(jeez, how I wish I'd working on mmorpg game instead, I would not have to solve SUCH problems)

- unfortunately, there is no way to completely prevent cheating, I can only try to make it harder

- if ANYBODY gets high ranking through cheating - and it makes him happy; well it is regrettable person, I cannot sau anything else

- I don't think that guests have anything to do with it. It takes 15 seconds to make new account

- I'm not sure if it worked the way you described (to not be allowed to play somebody you've beaten 4 times in rated game), and I definitelly don't like it. It would not work, it's not a problem to make a new account. Net mentioning technical problems, do you want me to keep database of all games ever played??

- some time ago there was an idea which could solve the problem, but majority of people did not like it. (But it's questionable, if people really KNOW what is good for them?) The idea was: you get NO points, if you win over a person with rating lesser than (let's say) half of yours. For example if you win 3 player game,  your original rating was 200, and rating of other people was 150 and 50, you get ONLY 2 points.

I like guests only being able to play non-rated games because they dont have anything to lose while if they win your points still go down.

Well picolo i have 300+ points and i promise you i did not cheat to get them. I have played 150 games lost 50 and won 100. Also i do not always play 1 on 1 games i wait for 4 players and i have played a lot of 6 players with friends and other people. I have played a lot of my games with mostly Real names players.

Some people do get that many points because (no offense intended here) they sit on this game the entire day.

hey picolo ice plays around 7 hours a day  and in an hour i won 34 points so lets count shall we     34 x 7 = 238 which means he can get 238 points in an hour so SHUT IT

Ehhh a tattle tale is a person who tells on someone else, because that second party did something wrong. Is this a type of confession  ;)?

I don't need points to tell me who is better than whom.
Yeah, I agree. maybe if the whole cheating thing gets out of hand, maybe it would be good to wipe (erase) all the registered accounts, and then make it so the person can only register 1 account per IP. I know it wouldnt do alot, but maybe it would make cheating just a little less known, (Even though i know not alot of people would want to waste another 15 seconds of their life to register again). I also like the fact that the people who always go on guests account can only play NON-RATED games. That should defiantely be implemented. I hate when people go on guest names and call the registered players "noobs, you suck, what a fag " and other unpleasant words, just so they can get the other persons score down...Gets kind of anoying.

I agree completely with these ideas. That way, it would be nearly impossible to cheat. Unless you want to go buy another computer to make a different account ;D

Who cares about points? Let's all play for fun. I play another game which has rating, and it is chaos over there because of rating. I used to care about points, but not any more, as I realised that the game should be played for fun. If people want to waste their time cheating instead of having fun, then let them. Or we can just abolish the points system?

good point. Sadly, some people prefer "to win" before "to have fun". Anyway, the points system will not be abolished

Well... Guests should be limited to non-rated games. That is the best idea I've ever heard, for this game. Think about this one Matlu. ;) If someone plays as a guest they're either here to try out the game/have some quick fun, in which case points wouldn't matter... Or they are here to try and bring other people's points down/cheat/cuss at people, in which case having their games non-rated would solve those problems. Best idea ever.
Title: Re: Cheaters
Post by: matlu on May 16, 2005, 01:42:28 PM
when a guest beats you - do you feel "less beaten" than when a register player beats you? Isn't it same (or even bigger) shame?
Title: Re: Cheaters
Post by: TheMcCool on May 16, 2005, 01:58:22 PM
That would be a valid question, except that you didn't address the point. There's an extremely large amount of random probability involved in this game, so guest or not you win some you lose some, even if you win more than you lose. Yet there's no risk of losing points as a guest, hence making it an avenue for stupid people who just want to try to be assholes. The proposed solution would curtail that problem, while preserving the function of the Guest option.

Edit: Also, using the same logic as the post I was responding to: Do you deserve points for beating guests? If they really are guests to the game that is. (If it's a bigger shame to lose to one then that implies they are less skilled/knowledgeable.)
Title: Re: Cheaters
Post by: matlu on May 16, 2005, 02:10:34 PM
I understand your point.

But I'm afraid, that if I just don't allow guests to enter rated game - it would confuse new people. Imagine that you want to try a new game, you login as guest, you see a game to join - but you cannot. It's not very likely to encounter non-rated game, I guess that people don't make them too often.

I don't think that I can expect somebody new, who just sees this game for first time, to write: "hey, I'm new here, please somebody create non-rated game so I can test it". I'm afraid that he would be just confused instead.

You wrote, that guest don't risk anything, but you risk you points. But on the other hand, guest cannot lose anything, but he also cannot win anything as well! You risk your points, but you risk always, regardless whether you play with guest or registered player. The guest is basically wasting his time, he cannot gain anything

Title: Re: Cheaters
Post by: TheMcCool on May 16, 2005, 02:20:07 PM
Well your whole argument is based around guests using the guest feature as intended... trying out the game. This thread is about cheaters and abusers. People use guest accounts to trade points, double team people, act like asses, and to lower other players scores without risk to their playername. If guests could only play non-rated then they wouldn't be able to do three out of four of those things. Then they would have to waste their time making new accounts every so often, instead of just clicking the guest thing.

Well it's no big deal to me, just saying I think it's a good idea.

How long does it take to make an account? Not much longer than it takes to click a 'guest' button. Perhaps e-mail validation might be necessary.

When this game gets more popular, there is more likelihood of non-rated games being played. My verdict: WAIT. :-\

Is it so hard to just waste 10 seconds of your life and make a Username? If someone wants to try out the game, they can register. Its not that hard. Most of these people that play right now, are eaither from the old CyberWars, or atleast been in the castle a couple times and know what the game is like. Most of the new people just log in as guest, play one game, then they lose and say that the game sucks. If they like it, they will make a Username. I still believe that the option of Guest shouldnt even be on there. If they want to try out the game, its not that hard to register. Then there wont be any sudden problems with Rated/NonRated games.

QuoteMost of the new people just log in as guest, play one game, then they lose and say that the game sucks

It's little bit off topic, but:

the game NEEDS new players. Currently there is probably something between 50 - 100 active players, almost all of them old players who played cyberwars. It makes NO SENSE to maintain such game for 50 - 100 people.

So I would ask you all to be helpful to newbies. If somebody new comes, and immediately meets Mr. See-How-Fast-I-Can-Kill-You, of course he gets pissed off and never comes again.

I mean, not kill newbies immediatelly and try to explain the game instead. It sure requires some level of "social feeling", but I hope that at least some of you are able of it.

Seems people don't only get pissed because of Mr. See-How-Fast-I-Can-Kill-You......I have also heard word from new players that others will gang up 2vs1 and follow them around from game to game, ridiculing them while they do that. And there is no real way to get rid of the intellectually-deprived people of society, like that. It's something that takes place everywhere, and is also something all must learn to deal with.

If anybody insults you, use commad  /report nick    It has to start with slash, and it also works on guests.
And btw - if you remembered the guest number correctly - it was Kaoss.    KAOSS, you see, I finally learnt to spell your name correctly, PLEASE you finally learn to be polite. To be honest, I personally do not mind at all if anybody is vulgar, insulting or whatever, but it may hurt this game and this site, and this MAKES me concerned, I hope you understand. Nothing personal.

it's not vulgar, but it's insulting. It MAY be funny in certain situations, but sure it's NOT funny to use it on unknown person. And doing it while logged as anonymous guest - this is simply lame, and (pardon me this time) NOOBISH.

QuoteCant wait for jagex site to reappear
Good luck. You don't have to wait, try to go to runescape right now, start calling other people noobs, and let me know how long it took till you got banned.

btw I have nothing personal against you, I already wrote same thing to other people. I'm just trying to keep some... level. I see that I have to make chat filter and it will solve (to some extent) many things

Quoteit was, i thought, only here to get peoples input about the game and bugs etc instead of stupid darn topics
I'm afraid you are right at this point, the forum is meant to discuss the game and suggest improvements. There is /report feature to complain about insults.
You see, but it's not clear to everybody, only few people know about this feature, so I don't blame him that he came to forum with it. I should display somewhere list of chatbox commands, and also lay down some rules explicitly. But I really have no time to bother with SUCH things, I  hoped it can be covered with "common sense" (something like: don't do to other people things which you don't want them doing to you)

I'm locking this topic
