Title: Language Filter
Post by: Hawk on April 09, 2005, 06:02:49 AM
I know sometimes we just need to express our feelings with light swearing, but having guests repeatedly throw F*** back and forth is a sight I can barely stand.  Could we have a filter that only blocks out, well, the eff word, racist remarks and other vulgarities? :P

Curse words are hardcore. Saying them alot means you're tough.

Give me a chat block then,  because I don't want to hear it. (or read it)

same with me. I kick such people out of the game on sight (or after warning). But I canot be online always :(   Probably I'll give moderator right to some people.
Writting chat filter is too much work, it not 100% effective.

Right now I don't consider it as TOO big issue. People who do it are mostly casual players, coming very seldom. I don't want to waste my time programming language filter because of few half-idiots. Please try to ignore them and don't get upset. It's hard, I know :/

If this game ever become bigger, I will think about this problem seriously. Again, right now I'm trying just to ignore idiots.

Couldn't this chat filter be "copied" into any games you make, if they have a chat feature (Hint: your aspiration of a MMORPG  ;) )

I dont understand the problem with language. I doubt we need a filter bcuz sometimes i just need to express my feelings as they come. Hawk, you've played games with me and i think u heard me shouting vulgar words like f*** or s*** because of bad calls by the game like my spider being killed by a slime warior or something. I say the words but not directly at a player because they is being rude to me and I dont like that but I mean there has to be a way to express yourself just as if you were sitting right next to me and playing each other. (Sorry if you guys cant understand some of my grammar)  ;)

You know, it doesn't really matter how do you mean it, because it offends people anyway. (it also offends me). So try to express your feelings in some other way

I remember a game I used to play with an amusing swear filter.

If you said a word on the banned list, then your chat msg would say something like: 'I'm a naughty boy, spank me!', or 'I have a potty mouth!'
Title: Re: Language Filter
Post by: matlu on June 21, 2005, 04:57:53 PM
probably simpliest solution could be to add "mute" button, so anybody can turn off the chat if it's too offending for him

you know its pretty sad that most of us as americans want to be censored... i mean its a freedom we have to say what we want... i just think its sad that people get that mad over one word... get over it.. i mean your gonna hear fukc all the time... its just a word
Title: Re: Language Filter
Post by: matlu on June 25, 2005, 12:39:01 AM
1. I'm not american (and I'm not alone)
2. It has nothing to do with freedom. It has something to do with (lack of) intelect.
3. I agree, it's just a word. I personally would not mind. But I know that there are people who would mind, and it could hurt my game and its reputation, and THIS makes me concerned, and THAT'S why I will fight it. So please keep such words for people who are interested in them. We don't need to hear them (we already know them). If somebody thinks that it's cool to have at least one 'f*ck' in each sentence then he's either too young, or too stupid (or both). No offence.

The constitutional right for freedom of speech only mentions barring the government from censoring, not autonomous private parties.
So you see, that line of argument wouldn't work even if this site and its owner were bound under American laws.

If you don't want to abide by the rules of in-game conduct then tough luck.

You know, some people are interested in what Ozzy says, but I'm REALLY not interested when somebody comes to my game and starts swearing.

and just by the way, I'm big Ozzy Osbourne's fan, I have all his cds, I was on his live concert. He is in Prague next week, and I'll be probably there  ;D

You know, if you feel the need to use language like that, feel free. Scream it at the top of your lungs. Just don't expose US to it.  Or, if you don't want to yell, kick something.  That's what I do.  I broke my brother's desk while playing Cyber Battles.

Hey, he hasn't noticed the elmer's glue YET...

I think we're also missing an obvious issue - this game is going to be played by minors.

I don't want young children to be verbally abused, and wholeheartedly support any efforts by Matlu to prevent this.

I would go so far as to say that a restriction on speech privileges should be imposed on an ad-hoc basis.

That is, there should be a facility so that if someone is a serial swearing monkey, a screenshot can be taken as evidence, and that person should have a permanent ban imposed on their chat function.

yes exactly...in gd you could say whatever u want...til u got caught..then u got banned for like 5 minutes..so what?
Title: Re: Language Filter
Post by: TheMcCool on September 04, 2005, 01:34:53 PM
There should be a chat filter that you can switch on or off before logging in, or in-game with a command (but On by default.) There doesn't need to be any rules about swearing, that would suffice. BUT, if people try and bypass that filter by saying stuff like Fu_^__^_qck, then they should be warned once, and then banned or deleted. The /report command works right? That sends a log of the past feww minutes or something, to matlu's computer?

I think this is the best way to handle it.

I dont think theres anything wrong with the word. I mean, it is an amzing word. So much versatility and i believe people should be able to truthly express themselves. As for lack of intelligence, i disagree, im sure just as many 'intelligent' people use it.

However, the offensive part is the context and the way it is used. e.g. aggressively or just dam right immaturely. Racist remarks should definetly be filtered there is no place for such behaviour >:(

Anyone with further interest in the subject, just take a look at this. You may have already seen it....oh well F*CK it.

If you read the post, i did say there was no need for it. People use it aggressively and yes, inappropriately. However, i just saying that there was no need to dismiss the word as: "something to do with (lack of) intelect."

I believe it has something to do with intelect and education, at least in AVERAGE. I know what I'm talking about, today I travelled whole night in a train with few workers  ;) Of course there are exceptions on *both* sides. But there sure is some correlation.

QuoteLoL so you're a radical-revolutionist, 'commy' loving, computer programmer, who supports guerilla warfare

I lived long time in both kind of reigns - in 'commy' and in 'democratic/capitalist'. Frankly, if I had to choose which one was better I would not know. They both have incredible merits, and terrible disadvantages. I would like to have some mixture of them, with only good things from both of them. I sort of believe that the 'commy' idea was good, just people put it in wrong use. Biggest difference I can see between people. Before the fall of 'commy' reign the people were simply nicer. They had less freedom, but it looks like they had less freedom to do 'bad' things and they were forced to do 'good' things.

Btw if you are interested to see my room, I included photo in the attachment :)

1. Obtain a notepad and pencil.
2. Sketch room.
3. Send sketch via postal mail to someone with the capabilities to scan your picture.
4. Have said sketch emailed back to you by said person.
5. Enjoy picture.

The history of the word was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. A little foul language never hurt anyone, after all it only means what people say it means, really it's all meaningless sounds.
I understand the arguement about kids reading it and credit that as the only reason for a filter as most children will abuse anything they can think of to abuse to get some attention.
about offending people though, I think thats just part of life that people have to deal with, some people are offended by language, some by violent figures, and others by hearing a bunch of adults whining about being offended. Its everyones right to decide what offends them, and everyone elses right to expose that as a weakness to help them get inside their opponents heads. I think if people could lighten up a little and not take everything personally the world would be a better place.
I am offended by people who take things personally, thats my weakness and I fully expect people to exploit it to get an edge
Peace everyone 8) ;)
