Title: PC speed
Post by: matlu on March 30, 2005, 12:54:34 PM
A bit off topic, but maybe not really:

One certain person mentioned, that he plays the game on 350mhz computer. Currently I'm able to test the game on exactly same computer. It's really a bit antique, but the game runs quite well on it.

I did some experiments. The game is expected to run at 15 frames per second. When I open single game window it runs perfectly well even on 350 mhz computer. But when I open 2 game windows, it becames way too slow. Framerate drops to approx. 8 fps. End everything is a bit slower.
One bad consequence is, that you sometimes don't get 10 seconds to target your action, but less. So watch out for it :)
I could try to do something about it, perhaps I could slightly improve the game performance, but it would cost me considerable effort, and it's not high priority for me right now. (I pressume that most people either have faster PC, or at least don't play 2 games at same time)

BTW if I had such computer, I would try to upgrade it a bit. Even if I could not afford to buy new one, I could try to find out what *fastest* processor (CPU) the motherboard supports. If it supports for example 500hmz processor, it's great. Such processor is really antique nowadays, and it's sure possible to buy it for same price as one hamburger with cola. The performance increase compared to 350mhz would be really big.
It sure takes some skills to replace old processor with new one, but it should not be hard to find such skilled person

Perhaps provide a 'slow game' and a 'fast game' option later on.

'Fast Game' you can continue to develop graphics & rules wise.

'Slow Game' you leave as the original.

Hm, later, when the game and forum have more members, I'll make a poll to find out what computers do people have. (It makes no sense to make such poll now, with just few people around). I will make "slow game" option when necessary (when many poeple have slow computers).

I used to play CW against myself when I was studying it, and it lagged quite badly. That PC is 450MHz, I think.

For a "slow game" - could you reduce the expected fps to 5, and otherwise have it behave the same way as the "fast game"? 5 fps is ugly, but if it's properly timed so the frames are equally spaced, it feels a lot less laggy than a game that's trying to go at 15fps but can't. Hopefully it would mean that the different versions could remain connected, without too much work.

uh, 450 mhz. Well probably this game is going to be targetted at people with slower computers. It is sort of logical, people with fancy computers probably play ever quest and such kind of games.

Ok I'll try to do something about performance.

lol... When Guild Wars comes out I may suddenly disappear from here. I know during the beta weekend events I've gotten super addicted to it. I can't imagine what it'll be like once I can actually play it every day.

That was like me with Final Fantasy XI  :D for like the first 7 months...played it for around 25 days of playtime, but not anymore.

Well, Cyber Wars is still good after all this time because it's competition and strategy. Guild Wars has those elements in spades.. Really kick ass game. But I guess time will tell.

I've tried it out on the 450MHz PC, and I can actually play a two-player game with myself with no lag. So this game is already a lot faster than Cyberwars was.

Actually, few days ago I improved some parts of code, and it led to approx 5-10% performance increase. There still IS room for improvements, but it would require too much effort, and it's likely that it will just stay as it is.
Single game runs very well on 350 mhz pc. If you can run two games on 450mhz, then I think the performance is sufficient.

Also depends on RAM too. About 128 MB seems good enough with a 500 MHZ processor. Seems to require more RAM though the lower the processor's clock speed, seeing Java is a resource hog (as Zap and I put it).

Regardless of processor, I'd say 128MB is really minimum required. I hardly can imagine windows running with less? Maybe Windows 98 could run, but later versions would not. 256MB should be optimal.

Yup. I mainly use a system with a 2.4 GHZ processor and 256 MB of RAM when playing cw/clone though. Tried it on the other system previously mentioned (Win 98 of course) and it seemed to work fine too.

My comp is 2.4 ghz and my internet connection is upper end cable modem.  I would rather play CyberBattles then any other game.  My gripe is that out of 100 moves i miss maybe 5-7.

This is mostly on the Action picking screen.. while I figure out what action to choose I miss my turn.. If this time could be extended a few second that would be great for slow thinkers like myself.   ;)   It would save my hair, because I would not pull it out :)  Thanks!

I have a very good computer aswell. I can play any online multiplayer game without a problem. I have had a lot of costly work put into it, but as cdigi said out of 100 turns, I may miss 25. That's because I am either eating or doing something.

this game is SOO much fun to play after a blunt, the strategys seem to just jump out.
more fun that playing drunk, wher the monsters seem to revolve around the room and you wake up next morning naked with half your points gone.

There's a difference between High and Stoned? I don't know my drug terminology, because drugs suck.
Title: Re: PC speed
Post by: Slayer_Z on October 04, 2005, 07:19:44 PM
Yet, yes on two things, there is a potential diffrence between high and stoned.
And yes, drugs do suck.
Getting stoned is smoking marijauana, a pland which will never beclassified as a drug in my mind, although sociaity has it labeled as satan. For refrence, watch reefer madness, which very biasly labeles marijuana the child killer that destroyes worse then heroin. ;)
Getting high CAN and often DOES refer to smoking marijuana as well, but is also used as a referance for using hard drugs, such as cocaine, heroin, extacy, and LSD among others.
I'll be first to admit that I will smoke a J and love everyone, but as for hard drugs, all they do is destroy.
from what I've seen Gut has the same mindframe on the subject, so I dont think its fair for someone to call him a drug addict if hes a smoker.
but Ill let him handle his D- fence, hes more than capable.
I hope that clears up any questions you may have had.
Peace
Slayer
(I think thats got a nice ring to it) :D

So stoned is smoking marijuana, and high is smoking marijuana and other drugs...riight.

What are the effects and how do they differ?
Title: Re: PC speed
Post by: Slayer_Z on October 04, 2005, 10:07:27 PM
Uhhh.
Mainly, the diffrence is that smoking marijuana relaxes you ,and makes you peaceful and smily.
other drugs such as coke, or extacy make you feel REALLY diffrent, coke gets you all telkative, and feelin crazy, extacy makes you trip out with euphoriatic feelings of goodness.
Mainly, Drugs make your body dependant on them, so you need to keep doing them untill you dont get high anymore, you need em to feel normal.
Plus they have negative effects on your body that become very appearant, such as shaking, and stupidity. People are willing to do stupid , destructive, violant things to get the drugs they are addicted to.
Marajuana on the other hand can only make a person MENTALLY dependant, that is to soy, a 16 year old with no friends who turns to weed to kill the pain may think he HAS to be high to cope, but really, his body wouldnt experience any withdrawel aymptoms without it, and he really needs therapy to counter his depression, not rehab.
A person with a strong mind can stop getting stoned anytime he wants to. Using me as an example, I love to get stoned, and will continue to do so, but at this moment of my life, its not convient for me, and I havent smoked in 3 months.
Also, just for the record, I quit smoking cigaretts for good, 4 months ago, cold turkey, and havent cheated.
Im a happy slayer  ;)

http://www.erowid.org/

Neat trivia, Hong Kong was under rule of Great Britan due to a drug war between England and China.  England wanted to buy more opium then China wanted to sell..
Another one, USA was founded because Christopher Columbus ran out of beer and they went ashore to make more.. Oops found America.
Another one, during the Civial War in America farmers were fined by the government if the 'Didn't' grow HEMP.
During alcohol prohibition the biggest advocates to illeagalize it were the maffia.
In 1987 ecstasy was legal, and was made illiegal not based on any damaging effects, but rather the potential for abuse.

neat ;)

Drugs suck...good job on the cigs Zak, but stop telling people to smoke J's...Bakster, don't smoke a J.  Just because the rappers and thugs do it, does not mean you have to.  Anyways, I am pissed, but im not sure why.  Maybe because I am feeling a little sick.  Ah well, have a good night fellas, im not going to play tonight, school is too much work and I like sitting around doing nothing when I have the time to.

Alright...Happy Turtle signing off....
