Title: Attempted Mech Warrior
Post by: Dodger on July 08, 2005, 03:34:24 AM
Well I've never really done this before, but i thought i would try at a Mech Warrior.
The one at the moment isn't really working for me. It looks kinda wimpy and small.
So i did a total remake and tried to make it look more like a warrior, hence the axe and shield. Unfortunatley it kinda turned into a medieval mech lol  ;D.

Your Mech Warrior is bad and you should feel bad!

There.  I criticize.  Remember - you need a "dead" stage.

Ouch!
ok ok, I just dont like the present one. The old one filled up all of the space but the new one looks pretty small. I tried to make a tough looking Mech but obviously i failed!
Havn't made a dead phase yet, wanted to see what you thought

Looks like a damn fine initial version.  Yeah, scale it down a bit, perhaps enhance the contrast and brighten it up a touch, but nice effort.

Is the mech going to throw its axe when it ranges?

Not really sure...good idea. How else could it do a range attack?

Why scale it down a bit? I thought the point was that it was bigger and meaner.

It looks good to me, though I'm not sure about the animation. I think the feet look odd, because they just stay the same when it moves up and down.

Yeh i han't really sorted the animation yet...feel free to edit it if you can improve.
I'll probably sort out the shield and feet tonight and make the axe move also...oh and make a dead phase.

ok i animated it properly....what is it that you want me to change about the feet?

I altered it slightly with stamping feet but it didnt really work when i animated it, so here is the original.

At the moment it looks like the lower part of his leg is telescoping into itself (and while that's quite possible for a Mech Warrior, it's not very believable visually.)

It might help to make his heel lift slightly off the floor when he goes upwards (and the general shape of the foot can follow that.)

If he's meant to be bending his knee forwards, so that the leg appears shorter due to perspective, you could make that more believable by causing the knee to cast a shadow part-way down the foot when he's crouched.

Thanks Blade, I'll give it a go...

Hows this?

That's one method on each foot, isn't it? Looking at it, I think the "shadow" effect works better out of the two. Maybe a very tiny heel movement would work, like one or two pixels changing at the corner. I'm not sure. With mine I just adjust them a little at a time until they look right.

hmmm...but i dont think the shadow effect would work on the other leg because the angle is so different.
I quite like how it looks now apart from the heel bit, I'll try making it move less.

I think it looks koool. Much like the japanese war machines you see in anime ;) But perhaps its a little too detailed. Sometimes the simpler designs work the best.

But dodge.....your right it does look meaner.

Yay! Probably right about too much detail, maybe I'll try and make a new one sometime....
