Title: Works of T3h Luggage.
Post by: T3h luggage on March 26, 2005, 01:12:24 AM
Ok, I played Cyberwars back in the old castle, and it was my favorite game paired with Battle Thingz.  I've since become a spriter, so I made a few things.  All 100% from scratch and made pixel by pixel in paint.
First, here is my sentry robot.
Next, just for fun, is a new commander: (definitely not my best graphic.)

I like the robot design very much. One problem.....it needs to be on a black background. I don't know if it will work on a black background.

Oh yeah, you're right.  I tried it, and it still looks fine, except his antenna disappears. I'll make it gray later.

Uh, so many talented people around :)  Robot is great  (btw the background doesn't really have to be black, it's possible to change it, but black probably looks best...? I'm not sure. Perhaps I could experiment a bit with it)
Commander is also excellent, if he were animated, he would be sure worth appearing in the game

That robot isnt from MegaMan X too?

No, the robot isn't.  But the megaman X sprite isn't either.  I made it, but it is megaman x.  Maybe I can edit it to be more commander-y

I think he looks VERY commander-y, especially wearing this spacesuit... that's something that old cw graphics lacks....

Maybe I should just make it less x-y.  OK, I animated my robot with a black background, and I think that it is better without the antenna, so I'll call it final for now.

Thanks for the comments, guys.  Is there anything that you'd like to see made/redone?  Post it here.
Edit:  I just realised that I forgot to do a dead pose for the sentry.  Here is the final sheet:

To speak the truth everything needs to be replaced, except currently the Sentry Robot(thx to you) the BattleMech, and the commanders.

Sorry about not foing the spideroid, but I have no Ideas or inspiration for that one.  Instead, I have done the laser robot.  I used the same pallette I used for the sentry, and made it's structure similar as well.  The animation isn't as good, but it's not very posable.  And the dead pose is better

Graphics used for the Sentry Robot look as if it would be the Mechanoid version of a Predator (if I didn't have a predator in my hand that game, I might have thought it was, since I was killed when I first saw it). Pretty good though and perhaps if there is some sort of more powerful two-legged Mechanoid creature below the Battle Mech, it could be used. Laser robot looks interesting, though perhaps it does work when animated. I don't understand the point to the white stuff on the Alien Hatchling though. Quality is truly amazing though. Don't see why many other games put such a great emphasis on things being "real 3d".

lol, I understand that "white stuff", but I'm not sure if I can say it in english. It's.... broken egg. It's hatchling, atfer all. The quality is really excellent.

The hatchling looks OK , but if we were going to choose an alien hatchling I would go with the other one that was made. The other one has that crazy little alien feel to it.

But eggs tend to be frail, after one attack its "egg bash" ability would be obsolete, then what would it do?? ;)

Continue to be naturally weak.  Hence the reason to rename it AG!

Hey, then it could lower enemy defence!
Yeah, white is the hardest color of all to shade.  The hatchling isn't nearly my best graphic, it was just an attempt to make a more comical version, inspired by an invincible alein hatchling that I mutated from a droid.  It was attacked several times by multiple enemies and yet surviv'ed.  I didn't find out untill after I had already made the outline that Halk had already done another one. Maybe a poll would settle which to use...
OK, some animations:

Maybe you could make the the arm/cannon thing move back and forth, on the laser robot...? Sort of like a horizontal jackhammer motion, if you get my drift.

Drone is nice, it will be included in next game update.

BTW I noticed one thing. Too many monsters (and commanders) just turn their heads left and right. To have more such monsters on the board looks a bit... funny. They look like soldiers during a practice. Or like a crowd watching a tennis match.

If possible please try to be a bit inventive with these animations. At least make something move its head up and down, or some completely different movement. (For example in old CW some commanders were.. uh.. not sure how to say it in english, such nervous movement with leg, you know what i mean :)

Indeed, this is the greatest obstacle in making these monsters.  How will they move? is too hard a question often to ask myself.
If you have ideas on how a specific monster should move, including on the laser robot(needs way more movement.)  I have some good scetches of  the spideroid, and some ok ones of the probe, but not much else.

The spideroid should bob up and down - while tapdancing (optional). I already gave a suggestion on the laser robot.. let me know if you need a clearer explanation.

Oh, and by the way, Matlu, is there a problem with my laser robot?

Hovership looks fine, I'll try how it animates and upload it.

Ehm, laser robot... uh... how to say it ... to be honest, that's only single one piece of all your work, which I somehow don't like, in my opinion it looks bit too complicated. If you just look at it, it's hard to tell what it should depict. Old one is much simplier, but I think it also looks far better. I don't know. Ehm, I guess that I'm just too picky :) I can upload it if people like it :)

Ehm, I hope that you are open to criticism :) One more thing is, that all "corpses" look too similar, and it's hard to distinguish and match them.. at least in my opinion. How example if I saw this hovership and its corpse separately, I would hardly dare to match them together.

But you are really doing great job, I guess I'm just way too perfectionist :)

Heh, no problems...
I definitely understand with the corpse.  I'm just going to take the whole thing from now on, and with the hovership, and make it look destroyed, as opposed to just pieces.
Now, I can understand the laser robot. It is rather complicated, and it's angle makes it a step into more 3-d looking sprites, a field I'm not very good at.  It's based off a doodle I drew while I was eating, so I wasn't really all that intent.  I think that a "site poll" would see if others share your opinion.  If anyone has any suggestions as to how to simplify it, I'll try them and see if it looks better.

the hazard of asking for suggestions is that I have gotten the same answer with the same file attached (once through E-mail, though) twice.  I mean, I'll so it all eventually, but for now I need to know what to do next.  Which ones bug you, and you want gone.

We don't exactly need new ones. But It might be able to run against the current commanders. Although I have gotten used to them(except the superhero one  :-\, which should be changed)

Commanders have to be replaced as well, but it's not a priority
- there are still 2 "jagex" commanders
- sadly, also "monkey" commanders are stolen (person who donated them claimed they are not, but they are, I found them on other page, just slightly modified.) But I don't think the person who originally created them would go after me so it's less-or-more ok

ehm... and.... except monsters... there is still fortress, beacons and forcefield :)

I agree that T3h Luggage seems to be a tech kind of guy. I guess I can think about doing some more life monsters.

I've not been around much recently because it seems to me that nothing is safe at the moment. I don't want to invest loads of time (in playing or spriting) and then find I don't like it any more. It could happen. I'll think about it, anyway.

I just noticed that raikoukami said that. I think thats a friggin great idea add the ceiling walker as a new monster. You could make it have like 7 strength, 7 defense, and 4 movement points, and let it have a range attack of like 5 and 4 range str, like the laser robot. Would be fair to the aliens to have a strong range attack monster. Also would be cool to see a new monster on cyber battles.

No one seems to understand the game is on a fragile balance of monsters, no new ones should be added.

My suggestion would be to draw hover tank next, to go with the tank. And I did a probe ages ago - it just got overlooked.

(Edited to add) Droid and Jeep afterwards! I believe that would finish off the mechanoid-units.

So what mechaniod monsters can't be attacked by anything but range, or monsters of that type???

Although there is more(but for times sake I'll give you the basic), mech has things with higher stats, while aliens have their slimes. For every one races advantage, the other races will have a different but equal in value advantage.
Title: Re: Works of T3h Luggage.

Pound for pound, I've always seen alien as having stronger monsters, and mech as having a stronger support function (force armour, teleport, etc.).

Slimes aren't really that good.  They have average stats at best, and can be easily killed by almost anything with ranged attack.
Plus, the alien queen isn't very strong either. I mean, what is it, 8/8 stats?  Even with the B. Mech having a lower res. and speed, it isn't as good...
Title: Re: Works of T3h Luggage.
Post by: BlitzJoker on June 13, 2005, 07:59:48 PM
Ehh not only are the monsters balanced, but there is also a balance of things to kill each other, adding a new monster would throw this balance off. Lets just state the more obvious ones, cause im not going to study the intracate workings of CB  ;). Lets say you have a spider after you(having the longest movemnt of 6) you have teleport(movement of 7) to conteract that. You have an alien queen after you, you can use a B.Mech(higher stats) to kill it. Then your opponent have a B.Mech after him, he could take advantage of its low restance and use mind control. In other words everything has its weak point and an action that will be proficient in taking advantage of its weak part. This is how Cyber Wars "just worked", they carefully put thought into it....they didnt just say "hey lets throw in this monster". I hope that makes it a little clearer.
Title: Re: Works of T3h Luggage.
Post by: Bakster on June 14, 2005, 06:31:27 PM
Spider doesn't have any weakness apart from B Mech, and what if you don't have one?

The aliens already have 3 strong monsters (Tentacle, AQ and Pred) we don't need another one ???
Title: Re: Works of T3h Luggage.
Post by: T3h luggage on June 14, 2005, 06:35:41 PM
this is all quite silly, as there is no chance that the cieling crawler can be used as a monster.  It was a JOKE!  Treat it as such.  You might as well make the tentacle's death stage a plate of fried calimari.

Title: Re: Works of T3h Luggage.

I wrote a mini "animator" program that takes the image and displays its animated form, without going through the hassle of making an animated gif for it. (It doesn't check the image size, so when I'm working on an animation, I put my current version in the top-left of the image so it gets animated, and use the area below it and to the right to work in.) It's been very helpful to my spriting here, but I wrote it in C/Allegro, which is rubbish for distributing... maybe Java would be better, though it has its own set of difficulties.

If you happen to be a programmer, you could write your own ;). It took me about 10 minutes for the C one, and it must have saved me an hour already.

I have Animation Shop too. (I use it to make the final GIF for display.) It takes me a couple of minutes each time to prepare the animation from my working-bitmap. I'd guess it would be the same for you, unless you edit in Animation Shop? That would work, if you can stand it.

Perhaps I'll make yet another version of it, after all the graphics are replaced.  For now I have a tentative cyborg.  I don't really know if it animates or not, as I don't have animation shop on this computer.  If someone would check I would appriciate it.

Howdy Doodie!

He is the "master of english" because he says bye to people with things like "toodles" and hello to people with things like "Howdy doodie". This is also why he is my idol. If there is anything I can ever do for your dougie fell free to "asky me" and i will be your loyal "slavey".

They used lassos and big cowboy boots, and rode horses and stuff. The only difference was the hats. They wore those samurai hat things. The cowboy hats of today were an attempt to copy that. But instead of totally copying it, they made changes for comfort and style, producing the unique cowboy hats we know today.

It is the result of air-gitarish arm movements in my first attempt at a predator, and the overall it-didn't-turn-out-well-ishness resulted in the making of this.  It's not very serious, but less serious things (like femal commander) have been put in, or at least hack ceilingcoughwalkerhack considered. ;)

As for size, im sure some skilled artist could make a small, yet detailed predator. It doesnt have to be to detailed. Remember, predator had a mask, so that could be used instead of the complicated face.
Flip flop! John Kerry! ;D

Nice attempt but it's looking a lil mech now. Maybe its body should be exposed (less armour) and limbs should be more humanoid. Perhaps it shouldnt have a mask after all. Try a small mouth of some sort, red eyes and a textured face. I suggest you research the creature more and see what you can come up with.

BTW, im a big fan of your work ;)
Yeah, one problem is that the predator is quite techish.  It got all sorts of new-fangled contraptions...

Really bad example (hey im no artist :D) , but something along the lines of this.

Hmm, i see what you mean now, so hard to design an effective character, in such little space.

I have a few queries about the new Mutant Mount.

1. It looks too "medieval", if that is the right word.
2. The animation sucks, it moves up and right/left with no leg movement.
3. Elephants are overrated

And the new force armour is a bit hard to see...the colours dont blend well.

1:  I can see kinda what you mean, but remember, these is aleins without technology as we would think of it, is all organic, so what might seem low-tech to us is different to them.  And I don't know the last time I saw a green elephant-like creature with a tentacle instead of a nose plowing through mideval europe.  ;)  Not that I've ever seen mideval europe period.
2:  If it does that, It's animation bugs, not purposeful movements.  I can try and fix that.

In fact I already sligthly modified Motant mount graphics before I used it into game - the original version had quite jerky forth and back movements, I just made it a bit smoother. But you should probably edit it yourself again, because I apparently made it worse :)

Elephants have trunks, which are too similar to tentacles to make out the difference, especially in a teeny weeny pixel graphic.

Anyway, the dark red blends with the black background too much, and there is no outline to the armor.

Man, you guys are pretty cruel... :-\
The eye is indeed pretty cool, but there is no way I could animate it.  It's been so heavily shaded in photoshop, there's nothing I could do to it in paint.

Loving the elephant, besides the animation part.

Force armor needs work, possibly a "glowing" outline or something? Or a lighter shade of red for the body?

Just curious if you planned on editting the force armor and the elephant animation.

Please create new thread if you want to discuss emotes or just insult each other.

I don't think that T3h luggage appreciates such off topic posts in his thread.

Here is a brightened version of the force armor.  Hope it is better. (http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/3710/forcearmorbright2rn.png)

Better, but it needs an outline of some sort....and perhaps a little more brighter.

Could you outline it in red or something? To make it have a glowing effect like the old one?

prolly because it doesn't animate or really look that good?   ;)

I tried it before and it didn't look too good, but I could try again.

BTW, it does have a considerably lighter red outline now.

In other news, I posted this before, and it appears to have not come through or dissapeared.  Strange, It's happened to me before.
